Few materials work quite as hard as tiles in a bathroom. Yes, they're an incredibly functional feature, but they also add a lot visually, so needless to say, you want to choose them well.

And in 2026, bathroom tiles are seeing a real shift in style, away from stark whites and overstated geometrics and towards nuanced color palettes, gentler patterns, and more thoughtful applications.

We're firm believers that your bathroom tiles should be as visually striking as they are functional, and trend reports are always a great source of designer-approved inspiration. From the colors and patterns to the types of tile everyone's talking about, these are the 2026 trends to know for your bathroom ideas.

1. Tiles in Deep Saturated Tones

In the past, light, bright, and neutral tones may have reigned supreme, but 2026 is all about embracing a deeper, earthier palette for tiles. And it's not just the color itself, but also the undertones to ensure you are creating a space that feels warm and inviting.

'In 2026, bathroom tile is moving in a more expressive direction. We’re seeing people embrace richer, more saturated colors, like deep greens, garnets, and warm ochres, as a way to bring more mood and personality into the space,' says Jamie Chappell of Fireclay Tile.

'I’d keep the styling pretty intentional and let the tile be the star. If you’re going with a bold, saturated color, even something small – like a niche or a backsplash – can completely change the feel of the room, especially when everything else is a bit more understated.'

2. Artisanal Bathroom Tiles

The desire for texture and interest prevails, and tiles are one of the best ways to introduce a more organic finish to a bathroom scheme. As such, those more irregular forms, like zellige tiles, are proving popular.

'There’s also a big shift toward tiles that feel a little more lived-in and artisanal. Glazes with variation, movement, and depth give that collected, handmade look, which feels a lot more personal than perfectly uniform finishes,' Jamie notes.

'With more high-variation or handmade-looking tile, I like to balance it out with simpler materials – think warm wood, soft stone, or clean-lined fixtures, so the space doesn’t feel too busy.'

3. Pretty Patterns and Gentle Geometrics

Tiles that embrace pattern are back in a big way, but not the overly bold, geometric designs of past years. Instead, 2026 bathroom tile trends are gravitating towards softer, more nuanced patterns that feel considered rather than overwhelming.

'Pattern is coming back in a big way, too. From checkerboards to mosaics and more unexpected layouts, people are getting more confident about using tile to make a statement. Overall, it’s less about playing it safe and more about creating a bathroom that actually reflects your style,' Jamie explains.

'If you’re leaning into a pattern, the best thing you can do is commit to it. A checkerboard floor or mosaic wall can have a lot of impact, especially when you keep the rest of the space a little more minimal so it all feels cohesive rather than overwhelming.'

For Burcu Ercetin of Design & Curations, the most on-trend checkerboard patterns are those in more muted tones. 'Mid-scale checker patterns are making a BIG comeback, but in softer, more nuanced colorways rather than high-contrast only. Think cream paired with muted gray, or ivory with warm tones for a more elevated, European feel.'

4. Classic Palettes With a Modern Twist

Classic bathroom color pairings will always be in style, but when it comes to tile choices this year, designers say there is a shift towards a more modernized take on these beloved combinations.

'Updated classic palettes [are trending], where timeless layouts meet trend-forward colors. For example, emerald green paired with warm neutrals, or layered creams and ivories for a tonal, calming space,' says Burcu.

'Lean into a layered approach. Pair these tiles with natural materials like warm wood bathroom vanities, alternating stone accents, and mixed metals to create depth - while keeping the plumbing fixture finish consistent.'

5. A Return to Tradition

There are several traditional bathroom features making a comeback this year, and tiles are no exception. Tiles in classic patterns, timeless layouts, and natural materials are reinstating themselves as staples in bathrooms this year.

'Much like residential architecture as a whole, bathroom design is experiencing a resurgence in interest for traditional elements. Timeless tile palettes are much more desirable than bold tile choices,' explains Jaime Dupes, Senior Lead Designer at Copper Sky Design + Remodel.

'In 2026, we will continue to see hand-glazed ceramic tiles, natural stones, checkerboard floors, hexagon mosaics, and neutral colors dominating bathrooms. These sophisticated materials pair well with warm wood elements and nickel or brass plumbing fixtures.'

6. Color Drenching with Bathroom Tiles

Color drenching with tiles is a fun way to create a tonal feel. In this bathroom, green tiles flood the room, creating a really warm and calming feel.

If you thought color drenching would be a fleeting trend, think again. It's an approach that helps you to create a cozy, all-encompassing scheme, and in bathrooms this year, designers say tiles will be an important part of creating a tonal look.

'Color drenching has become one of the defining moves of 2026, and that styling crosses into tile as well. Upcoming bathroom designs are tile-drenched; our studio is running the same tile from floor to wall to shower with no interruption, no transition. What that creates reads as architectural rather than decorative. It stops being a tiled bathroom and shifts into being a styled room of the house,' says Karen Asprea, Founder and Principal of Asprea Studio.

'Depending on the look you’re going for, this can be done with either large-format tiles, creating a modern space, or with smaller tiles, creating a continuous texture. Resist the urge to break it up with a contrast border or accent tile; the restraint is the statement. Let fixture finishes do the work instead. A brushed brass faucet or an unlacquered bronze becomes the moment of contrast instead. The look is elevated, chic, and lasting.'

7. Herringbone Takes the Spotlight

When you think of herringbone, wooden flooring probably comes to mind. But designers are seeing this classic look make its appearance in bathroom tile trends, bringing an unexpected layout to these small rooms.

'I believe a herringbone tile pattern will stay current and big in 2026. It is a very easy way to create texture in a bathroom by simply creating a pattern from a brick tile,' says Caren Rideau, Founder and Principal of Kitchen Design Group.

There are so many ways to create the look, from zellige and porcelain tiles to more natural materials. In this scheme, brick floor tiles in a herringbone layout add a more rustic, Mediterranean bathroom feel to the design.

8. Mosaic and Matchstick Tiles

Bathroom tiles are getting tinier in 2026, with mosaic and matchstick becoming all the more desirable. But layout and application really are key with this tile style to ensure it looks chic instead of dated.

'For 2026, I’m seeing a lot of movement toward mosaic and matchstick tile, particularly in classic layouts and Moroccan-inspired motifs,' says Jaime Rummerfield, Founder and Principal of Jaime Rummerfield Design and Save Iconic Architecture.

'They bring in just enough pattern and detail to make a space feel special, but still really livable. I always think about how to keep things feeling timeless, and these styles strike that balance beautifully.'

9. Adding Striking Tile Designs in Smaller Doses

In this bathroom, the tiles have been introduced on the vanity backsplash and shower area, balanced by pared-back walls painted white.

It can be tempting to fill your bathroom with bold tiles throughout in hopes of creating a really personality-filled design. But in 2026, restraint is the buzzword, and adding focal points in small doses is key to an elevated design.

'Homeowners are increasingly prioritizing color in their bathrooms, and tiles are an easy way to add both color and texture to a space,' says Cath Beckett, Co-founder of Yellow London.

'We like to take advantage of this by using tiles in plain colors like a bright blue, and more daring patterns like a vibrant stripe as bath surrounds, backsplashes, or even to encase an entire shower,' she explains.

10. Personality-Led Tile Choices

Stripes are a classic tile layout, and this bathroom proves you don't have to make things complicated to create a fun, personality-led design with tiles.

Talking of personality, tiles are being far more considered in designs this year. No longer are they taking a backseat to bold paint colors or statement wallpapers – instead, bathroom tiles are forming the basis of characterful style.

'We’ve had years of very safe, neutral bathrooms – beautiful, but often quite similar. That’s starting to shift. People now wish to bring personality into a space, rather than just playing it safe. So instead of defaulting to the usual options, it’s about looking for something that feels a bit more individual, whether that’s through color, texture, shape, or finish,' says Lesley Taylor BIID, Interior Designer and Founder of Baked Tiles.

'The key thing is to avoid the obvious. Rather than starting with a trend, start with the mood you want to create. Do you want something calm and natural, or something more bold and expressive? Once you’ve got that clear, you can choose tiles that help build that look, and this is where the fun can start, as styling then becomes much more creative.'

If one thing is clear, it's that this year's bathroom tile trends are shifting towards designs that embrace atmosphere and personality, rather than a basic style. 'Ultimately, the bathrooms that will stand out in 2026 are the ones where the tiles have been chosen and used in a way that reflects the personality of the person living with them,' says Lesley.

'It’s about creating something that feels a little less standard, and a lot more personal.' And if you're looking for characterful ideas to bring the rest of your scheme to life, take inspiration from the biggest bathroom trends for 2026 and beyond, as reported by designers.
