Shea McGee just made the case for ditching white bedding – here's why it's actually the perfect fall-ready refresh

As we edge closer to fall, there's all the more reason to start embracing earthy colors throughout our home decor. That's certainly the ethos of interior design maestro Shea McGee, who is encouraging us to step away from white bedding and delve into the world of color.

In a recent video posted to Instagram, Shea makes a clear and convincing case for re-thinking classic white bedding with something slightly more colorful. Although white bedding is amongst the most timeless of color choices, venturing into the world of color is guaranteed to add depth, warmth, and more interest to your fall bedroom ideas.

'If you don’t want to use white bedding, go with something that has some saturation but still feels neutral enough that you can pair a lot of different throw pillows with it,' explains Shea in the video.

This approach is all about venturing away from light neutrals such as white, beige, and light gray which can often lack depth and interest; and instead embracing grounding, earthy colors. Since these colors – think muted blues, greens, and rust oranges – have a natural quality, they're the ideal middle ground between classic neutrals and bolder colors. While bold and bright colors can be tricky to style and lack longevity, these earth tones are easy to incorporate and maintain appeal year-long.

In addition, these earth tones are also perfectly placed for the transition from summer to fall. While seasonal color trends can quickly become overwhelming, muted shades provide a subtle hint of the changing seasons without going overkill.

Interior designer Christine Vroom of Christine Vroom Interiors shares below her favorite fall color schemes, inspired by the natural world, and explains why they work well to create cozy bedrooms:

'Fall decor is most associated with warmer tones of rich browns, spice tones, chestnuts – basically anything that makes you feel cozy. However, my favorite colors for fall are deep rich greens with warm nudes and velvety cognacs. I think green is a nice addition because it brings the outside in. We lose a lot of outside color during this season so it’s a beautiful contrast to see those warmer fall leaves changing outside and still have your beautiful nature hues inside.'
