As we all know, Labor Day isn't just a federal holiday, it's a time when many of our favorite retailers launch some of their biggest sales of the year.

Marking the end of the summer sales, Labor Day is usually the last big shopping event to hit before Amazon Prime's Big Deal Days event (usually in October) and, of course, the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales in November and December, with major deals dropping on big-ticket items such as the best outdoor furniture and indoor appliances like the best non-toxic air fryers.

I've been tracking sales and testing products for four years, so to help you secure the best savings, I've created this helpful guide with everything you need to know about shopping the Labor Day sales.

When is Labor Day?

The next Labor Day will fall on Monday September 7th 2026.

As we well know, Labor Day sales will start way before this date. In 2025 we saw sales start in mid August and peak towards the end of the month and over Labor Day weekend. Some retailers continue their sales for a few days after that too, with many usually finishing their sales on the 3rd September.

Should I buy on Labor Day or wait for Black Friday?

If you're shopping for tech or small appliances, it's usually worth waiting until Black Friday – prices tend to be better. That said, it's not a hard rule. If you spot a standout deal and verify it with a price history tool like Camel or Honey, it’s smart to grab it early and skip the Black Friday frenzy (and the risk of sell-outs).

As for outdoor furniture deals, some of the best discounts of the year happen now, as retailers clear summer stock around September – you likely won’t see better prices until next year.

The best mattresses are also heavily discounted during Black Friday, so it's a good time to invest in one of the best. But if your current mattress is affecting your sleep or causing pain, don’t wait for the sale — your comfort is worth more than a few extra dollars saved.

Which stores are open on Labor Day?

Most major retailers are open during their regular hours on Labor Day. Target typically opens from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., though hours can vary by location.

The same goes for Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Nordstrom. Walmart sticks to its standard schedule as well, opening from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Be sure to check your local store for any changes and remember you can shop online.
