Blake Lively's bedroom layout 'challenges traditional boundaries' while tapping into this new, unconventional trend
Blake and Ryan's cabin-like sleep space ticks design boxes – but we're distracted by its unusual floorplan that's an increasing favorite in celebrity homes
Here at H&G, we spend every day researching and writing about celebrity homes, meaning no emerging trend misses our radar. Normally, we see an influx of celebrities experimenting with certain colors, textures, or countertop finishes – however, 2024's most talked-about trend is increasingly revealing itself in the shape of an unusual bedroom floor plan.
Last month, actor Bradley Cooper revealed that his bedroom boasts an open-plan layout – meaning his sleep space and bathroom aren't separated by walls or doors. Though bizarre, this revelation was met with approval from some designers, who say it taps into a luxury bathroom movement involving bathtubs in the bedroom. And, now, he's not the only celebrity to exhibit such a layout.
The functionality and aesthetic elements of this trend are not the simplest, but Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have revealed themselves as the latest figures to tap into the look, and if anyone can convince us to take the plunge, it's this power couple.

Unlike Cooper, who shared details of his open-plan bedroom/bathroom on a podcast, Lively shared a snap of her and Renyold's cabin-like space, comprising a blue-gray bed area that flows into the bathroom. This unconventional layout is not for everyone, but it is for some, including designer Nina Lichtenstein, who says the space is reshaping what we know about luxury living.
'In a departure from conventional bedroom design, Blake Lively has embraced innovation and creativity by merging her bedroom and bathroom into a cohesive and visually striking space. The seamless integration of these two areas challenges traditional boundaries and redefines the concept of luxury living,' Lichtenstein says.
'One of the primary motivations behind Lively's unconventional bedroom layout is undoubtedly the pursuit of luxury and indulgence. By combining the bedroom and bathroom into a single, open-concept space, Lively has created a sense of opulence and grandeur that elevates the everyday act of sleeping and bathing to a luxurious experience.'
Nina Lichtenstein is the founder and principal home designer at her eponymous design studio, based in Westchester, NY. Nina believes that home design should capture a family’s unique spirit by how it serves the family's daily needs while nourishing the soul. She has been celebrated for designing, renovating, and building elegant living spaces.
Following Lively (and Cooper's lead) may seem inaccessible in more compact spaces; however, we can still replicate its luxury by investing in a single tub and bringing that into our sleep space. This look is more common in boutique hotels, but there's no reason we can't recreate it in a domestic setting.

'The smooth transition from bedroom to bathroom fosters a sense of continuity and flow, allowing for effortless movement and navigation within the space. This integration also promotes a holistic approach to self-care and relaxation, blurring the distinction between restful slumber and rejuvenating spa rituals,' Lichtenstein explains.
'While Lively's unconventional bedroom layout may not be suitable for everyone, it undoubtedly serves as a source of inspiration and contemplation for design enthusiasts. The integration of bedroom and bathroom challenges preconceived notions of spatial boundaries and encourages individuals to rethink traditional design conventions.'

Recreating Lively's open-plan bedroom/bathroom arrangement is one thing, but tapping into its decor is another. We're starting with these pieces, including the same bedding she credited in her post (so, of course, we can be sure it's a safe investment).
'In conclusion, Blake Lively's bold bedroom design exemplifies the power of creativity and innovation in interior design,' Lichtenstein adds.
'By daring to break conventions and embrace unconventional ideas, Lively has created a space that not only captivates the imagination but also redefines the concept of luxury living. While her bedroom-bathroom fusion may not be for everyone, it serves as a testament to the endless possibilities of design and the transformative potential of thinking outside the box.'
