It takes a lot to impress estate agents who have spent years in the business, but a blue front can do precisely that.

This calming tone is a celebrity favorite, with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Sharon Stone, and Vogue Williams all sporting a variation of the tone on the first canvas of their home. However, just when we thought the Blue Front Door Club couldn't get any more admirable, Jessica Simpson joined the recruits.

The singer's soothing front door color is the focal point of her porch. It's vibrant yet not overwhelming, and better yet, it's easily replicable – all you need is paint and a brush. If you're looking to upgrade curb appeal in a weekend, you could do far worse than follow Jessica's example, as real estate agents explain.

'I have spent years walking buyers up to countless porches, and I am still amazed by the power of a front door. When that door is painted blue, something special happens. The colour feels calm and steady, and even a little hopeful, so people tend to relax before they cross the threshold,' comments Eric Bramlett, a realtor and owner of Bramlett Real Estate.

'That feeling matters because buyers make their first decision in the time it takes to reach the knob, and a calm mind is more open to saying yes.'

Shop the blue porch edit

Alongside painting your front door, you can introduce blue to your front porch (and beyond) with these items I've handpicked below.

Similarly, alongside boosting curb appeal, opting for a blue front door like Jessica's is one of the best ways to add value to your home.

'A blue door can also add real dollars. Studies that track sale prices show that homes with slate blue or navy doors often bring in a little more than identical homes with neutral doors. The extra tends to hover around $1,500, which is not life-changing money, but it is a nice return on one afternoon of painting,' Eric says.

'That premium exists because the color signals stability and care, so buyers assume the rest of the house follows the same pattern of good upkeep.'

Another benefit (as evidenced in Jessica's Instagram post) is blue's ability to be photographed beautifully. This is even more important than ever, since most house hunting now begins online, as Eric explains.

'A clean, blue rectangle, framed by fresh trim, pops against a listing photo and guides the eye toward the entry. Good photos earn more clicks, and more clicks mean more showings, which usually translates into stronger offers. Spending $10 on a gallon of paint to boost digital curb appeal is a simple trade that even first-time sellers can understand.'
