If, like me, you are desperately trying to keep your resolution health-kick going well into February, then it's probably time you start thinking about smoothies. Blending your own health drinks at home is a lot cheaper than buying them from the store every day. That is where a personal blender is a must-have.

The Ninja Blast Blender, from Walmart, is the perfect fit for compact kitchens. This single-serve leak-proof bender whisks up a quick drink without you having to decant from a huge container into a separate bottle, saving time, washing up, and the frustration of having made too much or too little.

Even the best blenders can take up too much counter space or small kitchen storage, and for an appliance many of us use only intermittently, it can be tricky to justify the real estate. This is where a personal blender can really shine.

Measuring just 3.54"D x 3.54"W x 10"H, the Ninja Blast 16oz fits very conveniently into packed work bags, meaning it is simple to find space for it when organizing kitchen cabinets.

As our tester Alex wrote in his Ninja Blast review, this appliance is ideal for compact homes and those who only need the blender for themselves. 'There's no need for us to have a 72oz monster blender taking up room in storage,' he noted.

It is just as simple to use, too. Charge it up, add all of your ingredients at once, and let it run. In the event the blades are just a little jammed, there is a handy LED indicator to let you know, so you don't end up damaging your new kit, either.

You should never judge by size, and this portable blender proves it. When facing up against the toughest challenge – ice, frozen berries, spinach, and protein powder all at once – the blender did a remarkably good job.

Alex noted that there were tiny but noticeable scraps of berry skin and spinach, but that 'you wouldn't notice them unless you were looking for them.' He found it was less good at blending protein powder, with those drinks sometimes feeling gritty.

However, Alex trialled it on a single 30-second blend programme and found that if you blended drinks with protein powders again for a quick blast, the appliance handled it well.

While it might not be as well-suited to cooking applications, struggling to make a seriously smooth hummus, it's perfect for a quick commute drink or a trip to the gym or pilates.

Shoppers love the convenience, too. Verified Walmart shopper Laurie enthusiastically wrote in their five-star review, 'This is the best purchase ever. I make smoothies all the time and hate having to keep my big blender out on the counter or dragging it in and out of the cabinet.

'This is the best alternative. I can also give my drink a quick spin if needed on some protein powders that like to settle if I do not drink fast enough.'

It's also incredibly easy to use. Punteha van Terheyden, Head of Solved at Homes & Gardens, adds, 'It's really easy to use and very intuitive. So much so that my daughter, who is nine, uses it at weekends to make us refreshing slushies and creamy smoothies. To clean, we simply put a bit of dish soap and clean water in, replace the lid, and hit blend. This clears the blades, so all you have to do is rinse thoroughly and leave to dry.'
