Kim Kardashian's hybrid living space follows this ingenious layout trend – experts say it promotes 'functionality and a sense of spaciousness'
In the socialite's home, the living and dining spaces cleverly flow into one another – and this style will only grow more popular
Though open-concept design has been on trend for some time now, it's showing no signs of fading. In Kim Kardashian's home, a dining room flows into a living room for a stunning, bright, and spacious effect.
We spotted the dining room idea in a TikTok featuring Kim and her daughter North, and haven't stopped thinking about it since. The textured wall centers the space which includes a massive rectangular dining table and pendant lamp. Overhead inset lights brighten the space. In the left corner, it flows into a neutral living room.
'Kim Kardashian's exquisite taste in home design is on full display in her open concept dining room, a space that masterfully balances opulence with a welcoming, homey charm. The standout feature of the open-plan living room is undoubtedly the large stone accent wall, which serves as both a visual and textural anchor in the airy, expansive space,' says Nina Lichtenstein, Westchester-based interior designer.

She continues, 'High ceilings add to the grandeur, enhancing the room's sense of openness and light. This design, paired with neutral-colored furniture in brown, black, and white in both the dining room and adjacent living room, provides a serene backdrop that lets the brightly colored framed artwork in both rooms truly shine.'
Nina Lichtenstein is the founder and principal home designer at her eponymous design studio, based in Westchester, NY. Nina believes that home design should capture a family’s unique spirit by how it serves the family's daily needs while nourishing the soul. She has been celebrated for designing, renovating, and building elegant living spaces.
That's not to mention that Kim's choice of an open-plan layout is a huge interior design trend for 2024. Lichtenstein states, 'Open concept design has become increasingly popular in contemporary homes, and Kardashian's dining room exemplifies why this layout is so coveted. By eliminating walls and barriers between common areas, an open concept floor plan fosters a sense of togetherness and fluidity. It allows for easier movement and interaction, making it perfect for entertaining guests or keeping an eye on children while multitasking. The uninterrupted flow between the dining and living spaces in Kardashian's home creates a harmonious environment where each area smoothly transitions into the next, promoting both functionality and a sense of spaciousness.'
The look has several benefits, starting with the fact that it's an incredibly flexible design style. Kathy Kuo, acclaimed NYC-based interior designer says, 'Open concept living room/dining room spaces like this one in Kim's home remain super-popular because they're versatile. You can easily rearrange furnishings to accommodate more people if needed and make subtle adjustments to bring the level of formality either up or down.'
Kathy Kuo is a celebrated interior designer and international guru within the home and lifestyle space. She has 20+ years of experience in the design industry.
Furthermore, the dining room layout makes Kim's space appear larger and brighter. Lichtenstein states: 'It maximizes natural light, as fewer walls mean light can permeate throughout the entire space, creating a brighter, more inviting atmosphere. Additionally, open-concept designs often make a space appear larger than it is, an attractive feature for urban dwellers and those with smaller homes.'

Kim's space is especially suited to this layout because of the neutral color palette. Kuo tells H&G: 'An open plan like this also is really well served by the neutral color scheme that's accented with a nice, bold pop of color from the wall art.'
Lichtenstein continues, 'Kardashian’s choice of a neutral color palette for her furniture creates a calming, sophisticated foundation in her open concept space. Neutral tones are timeless and versatile, providing a perfect backdrop for more dynamic elements like her vibrant artwork. The brightly colored framed pieces inject life and personality into the rooms, offering a striking contrast to the subdued hues of the furniture and walls. This juxtaposition not only enlivens the space but also highlights the artwork, making it a focal point that draws the eye and adds whimsy and artistic expression.
