Farrow & Ball's French Gray is the trending 'in-between' shade neutral lovers need to know about – here's what designers make of this soothing hue
For neutral lovers, this is the perfect shade to venture into the world of color
If you're somebody who loves to decorate with neutrals, then Farrow & Ball's French Gray should be on your radar. Although whether this gray-green paint is actually a neutral is up for debate, it's an on-trend, more interesting spin on traditional neutrals.
Not only is Farrow & Ball's French Gray an 'in-between' color that appears as both gray and green, but it's one of those paint colors that work in so many rooms and across plenty of decorating styles.
Since this calming shade seems to always garner interest, we decided to hear what designers make of this popular green paint. Read on to gain some ideas on how to channel this timeless shade – which we'd say is a perfect 'new neutral' for the coming year.
What color is French Gray?
An in-between paint color, French Gray reads as more of a sage green, counter to its name. That said, the presence of gray gives it a really liveable and grounding feel, meaning it's not too saturated or lively but instead soothing and quiet.
'French Gray is a soft green-gray that shifts beautifully in different lights, making it versatile and timeless. Its subtle warmth makes it an excellent companion for natural wood tones, block-printed fabrics, and earthy browns,' says designer Cheryl Clendenon, owner of In Detail Interiors.
As neutral rooms take on a richer, earthy quality for 2025, colors like French Gray feel perfectly fitting. Adding much more warmth and a natural feel than gray would, which can feel lifeless, this gray-green paint is a more interesting take on neutral paints without leaning too far into the world of color.
'French Gray would anchor a modern European-inspired design palette. I’d combine it with white oak floors, creamy neutrals, and black accents for contrast. It’s understated, sophisticated, and versatile – just what 2025’s designs are leaning towards,' says interior designer Jessika Gatewood of Gatewood Designs.
A green and gray hybrid, this soothing paint color has a vintage feel to it that makes spaces feel timeless.
How to decorate with French Gray
The beauty of French Gray is that it's incredibly versatile and easy to decorate with. Reading almost as a neutral, this paint color would work well in every room, from social spaces like kitchens and dining rooms to calming spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms.
That said, we asked designers for their favorite ways to style this flattering shade. Below, they share three ideas for incorporating French Gray – all of which are incredibly timeless. If you're looking to elevate your neutral rooms or embrace a soft take on color in 2025, this popular paint may be for you.
Use French Gray to create a calming bedroom
When choosing a bedroom color scheme, it's important to consider color psychology. Colors will affect the room's mood, from restful to aid with sleep to more lively through saturated tones. If relaxing is what you're after, colors like French Gray are a great way to go. Green is known to be one of the most soothing hues thanks to its association with the natural world, and gray feels muted, helping you wind down at the end of the day.
'When applied to the walls, it transforms a room into an elegant, cozy retreat,' says Boston-based interior designer Kristen Rivoli. 'Imagine settling into a soft down comforter in a bedroom with this handsome French Gray on the walls, complemented by luxurious wool sateen drapes that embrace you like a warm hug.'
Create a timeless kitchen or dining room
Kitchen color schemes are an important thing to get right. The heart of the home, the colors you use here should feel comfortable for day-to-day life while not lacking in interest. French Gray strikes the perfect balance for these spaces, with more zeal than light neutrals but not so bold you risk soon tiring of it.
'Picture gathering around a dining table with classic French dining chairs, soft candlelight, and a delicious meal. The deep French Gray on the walls creates a dreamy atmosphere, perfect for an unforgettable dinner party that you never want to end. I’m always on the lookout for the ideal home to showcase this stunning color and someone who appreciates it as much as I do,' adds Kristen Rivoli.
Use French Gray on woodwork or furniture
Decorating with paint doesn't have to mean painting the walls. French Gray adds just as much impact when channeled across smaller accents, such as woodwork and trim details within a room or even used to paint furniture.
'Because it is a neutral color with a slight twist – in this case a hint of green – we would use this in a place where we want a subdued hue that still brings a bit of playfulness to the space. French Gray would be wonderful for a hallway or as a cabinet paint color,' says designer Elizabeth Bolognino.
Whether used across wall paneling, architraves, or interior doors, this color will add interest to the space while maintaining a calm, neutral look. What's more, this color would pair wonderfully with so many other hues, from brighter pinks to warm browns to achieve stylish color combinations.
Soothing, timeless, and versatile, there's much to love about Farrow & Ball's French Gray, and it aligns perfectly with next year's color trends that favor 'in-between' hues. Whether you use this to create a relaxing bedroom or to venture away from lighter neutrals in the kitchen, this color is a real winner.
