Vacuuming is meant to remove dust, dander, and allergens from our homes. But if your vacuum's outdated, has weak filtration, or isn't powerful enough to vacuum hair, these allergy triggers can circulate into the air after cleaning.
To stop sneezing, itching, and breathing issues after vacuuming, you need a powerful appliance that can trap allergens with a HEPA filter, and actually pick up hair and fur, even from thick carpets.
The Cordless Dyson V15 Detect, currently discounted by a rare $200, boats all of that and more, with incredibly strong suction and whole-machine advanced HEPA filtration, making it one of the best vacuums for pet hair we have ever tested. I use it at home almost every day without my allergies and asthma flaring.
Dyson V15 Detect | was $849.99, now $649.99 at Dyson (save $200)
This incredible vacuum boasts market-leading suction, whole-machine HEPA filtration, no hair-wrap, and a green laser that reveals dust you can't normally see.

The Dyson V15 Detect Provides Exceptional Protection Against Allergens
Dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and other household allergens can trigger symptoms if left uncleaned. But as they're mostly microscopic, you need a vacuum cleaner that can remove and trap these super-fine particles.
The Dyson V15 Detect’s suction power sets it apart from other cordless vacuums. Its floorhead pulls stubborn fur from carpets with ease. Combined with HEPA filtration that traps allergens, it’s one of the best cordless vacuums for allergy relief.
I've been using the V15 in my home for 11 months, and since doing so, I no longer have asthma symptoms after vacuuming. All the sneezing I used to do after cleaning with my previous cordless, which didn't have an advanced HEPA system, also stopped with the introduction of this Dyson into my chore routine.
It hasn't been discounted since Black Friday, so if you missed the deals last year, you're in luck, as $200 off this Dyson vacuum is a rare find.
With its advanced HEPA filter, it can capture up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including most common household allergens. The Dyson V15 Detect can actually exceed official HEPA standards with 99.99% filtration in 'Boost' mode, and unlike many other vacuums, this filtration is intact throughout the entire appliance, not just the dustbin.
That will mean you won't get allergens flying into the air during vacuuming, which is a common cause of sneezing and other allergy-style symptoms when cleaning.
I also tested the V15 Detect in a cat and dog shelter, and aside from making the busy, fur-filled building more spotless than most other vacuums I've tested there, I didn't have any allergies triggered during cleaning.
In fact, it only demonstrated how well it can deal with animal hair:

The V15's brushroll never wrapped with hair, and after using it at home for almost a year, it still hasn't.
Dander is one of the main triggers for those with pet allergies, and it clings to fur even after it has shed. If your current vacuum struggles to pick up fur – most vacuums do, as pet hair is notoriously difficult to clean – then you're constantly being exposed to allergens at home.
Instead, the V15 Detect vacuums mounds of hair from thick rugs and carpets, then keeps the allergens contained inside the appliance, ready to be emptied outside of the house.
What's more, this is one of the most impressive vacuums out of the 90 we've tested at Homes & Gardens. It's an outstanding achievement that Dyson has managed to put market-leading suction power inside a cordless stick, as most cordless vacuums' performance pales in comparison to the best upright vacuums.
Dust, hair, crumbs, dried mud – the V15 Detect picks it up on virtually the first pass every time, while being lightweight enough to hold with one hand (just 6.83 pounds), making it easy to grab and use whenever you spot a quick mess.
And one of its most innovative and useful features is a green laser that reveals dust particles that you can't normally see, showing you when the floor is truly clean:
It also detects the surface you're vacuuming and how dirty it is, so that if needed, it can automatically raise the suction power, then lower it to preserve battery. It does the guesswork for you, creating a more effortless experience as you move through the house.
The Dyson V15 Detect is discounted to $649.99 at Amazon.

The Dyson V15 Detect may be one of the best, but you don't need to spend $650 on a vacuum that can banish allergens, if you're happy to compromise on some of the flashier features.
All prices correct at time of publication.
The Dyson V11 cleans almost as well as the V15 Detect, but it's much cheaper as it doesn't have any of the smart 'Detect' features, including the green laser and the automatic power adjustment. It still has full HEPA filtration.

While its suction is a little weaker and its runtime 20 minutes shorter, the Dyson V8 still has whole-machine HEPA filtration, and is a lot cheaper.

Another of our best-on-test vacuums, the Shark POWERDETECT Upright pulls up every type of mess in one pass almost every time, and has an 'Anti-Allergen Seal' on top of its inner HEPA filter. It's great for big homes thanks to its 0.5gal dustbin and power cord.

This bagged vacuum stores all dust and allergens inside a self-contained vacuum bag that you dispose of once full, minimizing your exposure to allergens even further. It also boasts the strongest cleaning performance out of the 90 vacuums we've tested, but its brushroll wraps with hair.
