The exterior doors to your home make an important first impression, setting expectations for the interior beyond. Therefore, choosing the right color for your door – both front and back – is vital.

But if you're wondering if back and front door colors mean anything, you are not alone. Naturally, you'll want to ensure your exterior door sets the right tone for the rest of your home. Whatever your style or budget, there are many color ideas – with different meanings – to make a difference to your humble back door.

Here, we’ve asked color psychologists, decorators, and interior designers for their take on the meaning behind a blue door, as seen in Jeff Goldbum's backyard. Known for his quirky, eccentric fashion sense, it comes as no surprise that the American actor and musician would choose a vibrant paint idea for his home's back door. But what does the color blue actually mean?

A great option for north-facing homes is blue. Blue door ideas – from sky blue through ocean blue and on to cobalt – bring serenity and tranquillity to any home because they are on the cooler end of the spectrum, and look beautiful in both city and rural gardens and yards.

Time and time again, research has shown blue to be the world's favorite color. This is because we are surrounded by it, argues Karen Haller, color psychology specialist, teacher, and best-selling author of The Little Book of Color– available at Amazon.

'It is important to remember that blue is a psychological color primary color,' says Karen Haller. 'Some of its positive attributes include positivity and serenity. Lighter tones of blue are associated with mental calm, clarity, and reflection.'

Bold, impactful, and elegant, blue is known to be a very calming hue. This makes it an exceptional choice for those who want to signal quiet intelligence, prosperity, and good luck. The owner of a blue door has likely made their home a comforting haven away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

This timeless color is cool, calm, and contemporary and works well in both period and modern schemes. 'A beautifully painted front door is the way to my heart,' says Irene Gunter, co-founder, Gunter & Co. 'Even though neutrals are popular for interiors, external schemes often fall flat without the gusto of a generous splash of bold color. My favorite exterior door colors are those that put a smile on your face. Blues would be my first port of call.'
