There's something undeniably stylish about a gray living room. It's cool, calming, and neutral. However, when paired with a deeper shade, the scheme goes from just cool to extraordinary. For proof, all you have to see is Hilaria and Alec Baldwin's home.

The couple's living room is the perfect example of how to make a gray color scheme look timeless and classic. Hilaria shared a video of the space on Instagram, and we love the combination of a gray, striped carpet with a gray sofa and gray walls. Punctuating the wash of gray and blue curtains, blue throw pillows, and navy blue velvet chairs adds depth. A bright spot comes in the form of white window edging and a bright white lamp on the corner table.

The navy and gray living room color idea originates from a long history. Jennifer Ebert, color expert and digital editor at Homes & Gardens states: 'Navy blue and gray is one of the oldest color schemes in the book. It's very classic.'

She continues on the gray living room idea, 'The colors work so well together because they both have cool undertones. Gray often has notes of blue, and blue often has notes of gray, making them perfect, cohesive compliments. At the same time, a darker blue shade like navy blue creates more of a contrast for a stylish, color-mixed look.'

The combination of textures in the Baldwins' home also contributes to the success of their timeless living room. Ebert states: 'I love the mix of fabrics and surfaces in the Baldwins' space. The wall paint is quite matte, which creates a beautiful contrast with the white, glossy lamp on the corner table. The glass top of the table reflects light give the space a bright and airy feel. In the center of the living room, the fuzzy living room carpet provides more texture against the linen-y gray sofa and the velvet blue chairs. All together, these feelings draw our eyes to all different areas of the room.'

Altogether this classic color scheme and a blend of textures creates a timeless scheme that will never go out of style. While the room may be out of line with the warm neutrals interior design trend of the moment, it doesn't look off-trend. Instead, the various visually interesting, historically inspired aspects of the design come together to create something that will never look dated.
