I've been hunting down the most effective pet hair cleaners by testing the best vacuums of all types in Bristol ARC, a local cat and dog shelter. And one lesson I've brought into my own life is that having a handheld vacuum is a game-changer for quick fur clean-ups.
And it's not just because of convenience, although that plays a huge part. Being able to grab this tiny vacuum off its handy charging dock takes a few seconds – no cords to plug in, no charging to do – and as it's so lightweight, it's a swift motion getting to the shed fur.
But of course, it also has to be good at pulling hair from upholstery and soft flooring. With the Black+Decker dustbuster furbuster AdvanceClean+ Pet's rapidly spinning roller and high suction, I was genuinely surprised at how well it cleans strands from every surface.
The pet shelter has thick rugs, low- to medium-pile carpet, sofas, padded upholstery, and within a few minutes of testing, I'd already cleared the majority of visible hairs in a room full of furniture.
It helps that the small vacuum is easy to use. It glides smoothly on soft fabrics, while at the same time clearly gripping the surface as it removes pet hair. What surprised me most was that this performance worked on the thick rugs, too, even without the large motor and high suction that you find in full-sized cordless vacuums and upright vacuums.
The Black+Decker dustbuster furbuster impressed even on thick rugs and carpets, pulling more fur than I could visibly see.
But performance aside, there's a psychological benefit to a vacuum that is quick and easy to use, which helps when cleaning before guests arrive, but will go beyond that.
Knowing that it will only take a minute to make small clumps of fur disappear means you're more likely to do it more often, and in turn, you're preventing pet hair from building up, one of the reasons why keeping a home with pets clean can be such a challenge.
When pet hair builds up or lingers on a soft surface for too long, it can become set into the fabric by people walking or sitting on it, it can trigger more allergy symptoms, and it can make it harder for your vacuum to get it all when it comes to your weekly deep house clean.

If you find yourself needing to quickly clean your pets' fur a little too often, it might be worth investing in something more robust. The Dyson Car+Boat, while more expensive, boasts suction that's similar to the full-sized Dyson V8, and it has a HEPA filter for better allergy protection.

This is the best cordless vacuum for pet hair you can buy, and although I love how quickly the Black+Decker handheld vacuum can clean up fur, it's not as efficient as the V15 Detect. I use this vacuum in my own home almost every day, and it gets rid of any mess instantly, and as it has a green laser that shows if any dust particles or strands of hair are remaining, it's perfect for when guests are on their way.
