As we anticipate the changing seasons, aubergine autumn is the newest fall color scheme that we're seeing cropping up in rooms throughout the home. It's all about the warming, deep wine colors associated with eggplant, perfect for creating a cozy feel. It's the kitchen however that appears the most popular room of the home to adopt the latest color trend for 2023.

We spoke to the design experts to find out more about this enchanting vegetable-inspired color and how to incorporate it into the home. 

A warming color for fall

Aubergine is naturally an interior color that's synonymous with fall, as interior designer Amy Wilson explains: 'This color palette perfectly compliments the changing of seasons due to the rich tones that help to create an ambiance that is cozy and inviting.'

'Using this combination of feminine colors correctly can evoke an atmosphere of mature elegance and style,' says Wilson. 

What does aubergine autumn signify?

'We’ve continued to see increasing popularity in the use of darker, deeper shades,' Elizabeth Sherwin, creative director at Naked Kitchens observes.

'Aubergine is a rich sultry color which is surprisingly versatile and works wonderfully in any kitchen. It’s both high in the glamour stakes, oozing drama and sophistication, as well as creating a warm and inviting space,' Sherwin explains. 

Interior designer Kathy Kuo also notes the eggplant-inspired color as a strong contender for fall decor ideas, explaining: 'Aubergine is such a natural fit for fall decor in the kitchen, so it’s no surprise that Aubergine Autumn is painting kitchens everywhere in beautiful deep purple hues this season.'

'Aubergine is both sophisticated and earthy, which makes it a really love color for an upscale kitchen and it’s a gorgeous compliment to the warm tones that many people typically associate with fall, like sienna, goldenrod, and rust,' Kuo adds.

'It is a very traditional color that was very often used in country house kitchens. This rich deep red works anywhere and has the ability to make a piece of furniture instantly feel grand and smart.'

How to style an aubergine color palette in your kitchen

Thanks to the understated and earthy tones, aubergine colors can be integrated seamlessly into the kitchen. While it may seem like a bold statement, it can actually boast a subtle and sophisticated look that promotes a warming feel. Design experts agree that opting to style the color around a warm palette with rich materials creates an impactful look. 

'Pair with an eclectic mix of materials like brass, rich walnut, and neutral fabrics to make the color truly stand out and effortlessly create a striking look,' suggests Elizabeth Sherwin.

Amy Wilson also suggests pairing aubergine tones with natural textures: 'This trend would complement your home perfectly if it features a lot of wood throughout your floors and furniture. Use these colors to accessorize and flourish against the backdrop of your home. Why not opt for some deep purple lampshades and pink curtains to build on the sense of warmth.'

You can also opt to integrate statement materials for a bold look, as suggested by Helen Parker: 'Mix with black granite or slate for a truly authentic look.'
